Family Planning Q & A
What if I have trouble conceiving?
If you have trouble conceiving, your Complete Healthcare for Women OB/GYN may recommend a fertility evaluation. This evaluation helps you consider all the factors that may contribute to infertility.
In a fertility evaluation, both you and your partner undergo some basic testing. For men, this usually includes sperm analysis to check sperm movement and viability. You may have blood tests, urine tests, ultrasound, and other noninvasive or minimally invasive tests to determine the reason you’re having trouble conceiving.
The Complete Healthcare for Women team is here to help you understand the causes of infertility so you can conceive when you’re ready.
What are the options for hormonal birth control?
Most birth control methods are hormone based. Complete Healthcare for Women offers all of the following birth control options:
Nexplanon®
Nexplanon is a birth control implant that your Complete Healthcare for Women provider places in your upper arm. Over the next three years, Nexplanon releases etonogestrel, a progestin hormone, to prevent pregnancy with more than 99% effectiveness.
Birth control pills
Birth control pills prevent pregnancy very effectively (99%) as long as you take them on time every day. Birth control pills contain estrogen, progesterone, or both. You can also choose extended-use pills, which allow you to skip your period long term.
NuvaRing®
NuvaRing is a small, flexible ring that you insert using a tampon-like applicator. The ring uses both estrogen and progestin to prevent pregnancy. You wear the ring for three weeks, then take a break for a week before inserting a new ring. When used consistently, NuvaRing is 98% effective.
OrthoEvra®
The birth control patch, OrthoEvra, is a transdermal patch that you wear on your skin for three weeks, then take off for a week. OrthoEvra is 99% effective when used properly.
Hormonal IUDs
Hormonal IUDs release progestin hormones to stop pregnancy for 3-5 years, depending on which one you choose. Your Complete Healthcare for Women OB/GYN inserts the IUD in your uterus, where it works for long-term pregnancy prevention. Hormonal IUDs are 99% effective.
Depo-Provera®
Depo-Provera is a birth control injection that prevents pregnancy for three months at a time. If you see your Complete Healthcare for Women provider for your injections on time without fail, this birth control method is 99% effective.
There are a huge array of choices in hormonal birth control, and your care provider helps you choose the right one for you.
Is non-hormonal birth control available?
If you want a non-hormonal option, the ParaGard® copper IUD is a good solution. This hormone-free IUD uses copper wire to prevent pregnancy, and it’s equally effective (99%). ParaGard works for up to 10 years.
